GAVU – Great Gallery
20. 1.–20. 3. 2022
Curated by Marcel Fišer
The exhibition is the first retrospective look at the oeuvre of the painter Václav Girsa (*1969). Before 1989, Girsa was a famous figure occupying the local punk music scene (the P.S. and Critical Situation bands) and fought his way to the visual arts only in the 1990s. He began studying at the Prague Academy in the studio of Vladimír Skrepl and Jiří Kovanda at the relatively late age of thirty-one. However, already at school, his works were quickly recognized as one of the most interesting contemporary artistic expressions in the country, even becoming part of the famous collections of Richard Adam and the National Gallery in Prague. Girsa during his career has not developed linearly, and he seems to have followed somewhat different laws than we are used to: he easily navigates between most different and highly disparate styles, such as Geometric Abstraction, various positions of Realism, punk, and infantile Primitivism as well as conceptual textual images. Paradoxically, his style is unmistakable due to its characteristic expression, Dadaist humor, and purely painterly qualities. As a result, all these diverse positions hold together and form a compact oeuvre that reflects the author’s pronounced and distinctly ecological worldview.
