5. 10. 2023 – 7. 1. 2024
Curated by Jana Pokorná Kalousková
Created by sculptor and ceramist Jan Lichtág (1898-1985), this relief, made of unglazed porcelain, or bisque, is set in a richly decorated wooden frame. It was commissioned by the Ministry of Education and National Enlightenment of the Czechoslovak Republic on the occasion of the St. Wenceslas millennium. Both parts of the work are connected with northwestern Bohemia. A graduate of the ceramic school in Bechyně and the School of Applied Arts in Prague (under J. Drahoňovský, J. Horejc), Lichtág subsequently spent two years in several top porcelain factories in France. This was likely why, in 1925, the Ministry of Education and National Enlightenment called him to the State Vocational School for the porcelain industry in Karlovy Vary, where he was engaged without teaching duties. During the following three years he created a series of some two dozen porcelain sculptures, which is one of the most interesting convolutes of interwar porcelain sculpture. Its adaptation into a relief was realised in the environment of the State Vocational School for Woodworking in Kynšperk nad Ohří, with which the Karlovy Vary school permanently cooperated. At the time the relief was created, Lichtág had already moved to Brno, where he modelled the piece before sending it to Karlovy Vary for casting. Its recent discovery in a private collection prompted archival research, which has resulted in new information that explains the background to Jan Lichtág’s work in Karlovy Vary.
