GAVU – Exhibition fr om the Depository
16. 2. – 1. 10. 2023
Curated by Jana Pokorná Kalousková
The collection of artistic textiles, comprising thirty large-dimensional works, began to develop at GAVU Cheb in the first decade after its establishment. In most cases, it was through acquisitions from exhibitions held at the Gallery. The first one to feature tapestries took place in the summer of 1966 and showcased pieces using the art protis technique side by side art glass. However, a more intensive focus on contemporary textile art dates back to the era after the reconstruction of the St. Clare Exhibition Hall in the late 1970s, when it hosted a display of tapestries by Jana Paulová. In the subsequent year, there followed Milča Eremiášová with her lace tapestries. In 1985, the Gallery organized even two exhibitions of textile art – from March to April, it presented Zdeněk Světlík’s aradecors and from May to September of the same year, Ludmila Kaprasová’s bobbin lace. With the current small exhibition, tapestry returns to the Gallery after more than thirty years. It is also the first professional compilation of this part of the collection. Due to the relatively large–dimensional formats, the curators’ selection presents pieces by only four artists but three different textile techniques. Examples of the traditional technology of woven tapestry are the works by Jaroslav Moravec and Jana Paulová. The display also introduces modern techniques of art protis and aradecor (invented in the 1960s and 1970s in Czechoslovakia) by Jaroslav Moravec and Zdeněk Světlík.
