GAVU – Small Gallery
Curated by Marcel Fišer
A graduate from the Prague Academy of Fine Arts, Tadeáš Kotrba (1986) has been present on the Czech artistic scene for about ten years. The Cheb gallery exhibits his series developed during the past two years. It combines his characteristic painting style with an utterly different expression – figural scenes adopted from the drawings by his father, Mario Kotrba (1959–2011). This brilliant sculptor and painter from the post-modern artistic generation and an author of many realizations in public space died prematurely ten years ago, at the climax of his career. The drawings, mainly originating from the last year of his life, are full of disquiet and inhabited by a host of demons and angels. Tadeáš sometimes adopted their individual parts, another time worked with entire compositions, always trying to translate them as faithfully as possible to preserve their original lightness. The paintings thus fuse two worlds: one is real and realistically rendered, featuring the artist, his family, and his father; the other is imaginary and grotesquely stylized, and the drawing style suggests that it remains invisible to the former figures.
