Radka Bodzewicz (b. 1991), a graduate of the Prague Academy of Arts (studio of Vladimír Kokola), uses unusual techniques to compose her images, expressing herself through these to achieve similarly unusual content. If in doing so she reaches for technologies directed towards the future, such as augmented reality, her themes often turn in the opposite direction, to the foundations of human culture anchored in the past. She often relies on verbal sources to find the themes for her work. The Mundus Imaginalis series also draws on literary inspiration, this time from a study of the same name by the French Orientalist Henry Corbin, which, based on Persian mystical texts from the 12th century, discusses the principles of symbolic imagination. According to Corbin, if we lived in a world that emulated a computer game, there would be not only a world of the senses and a world of the intellect, but also a ‘place’ where these two worlds meet and intermingle — the mundus imaginalis. It is a ‘world of the imagination’ where things happen that, though beyond our ordinary perception or understanding, are so vivid and real that they seem more real than anything else.
