Josef Hubáček, Sea Bay (Cap Ferrat), 1931

GAVU — Opus magnum

11.01 - 07.04.2024

Curator: Marcel Fišer

Opening on Wednesday 10 January at 17.00

The exhibition Under the Winter Sun of the South was held in Cheb in 2023 — its key figure was the painter Josef Hubáček (1899-1931), with works commemorating the plein-air sojourns of Czech artists in the south of France and Corsica from 1925 to 1931. Hubáček was the one who discovered Corsica, staying there himself for four consecutive winters, the first of these being in 1926/27. The Archive of the Office of the President of the Republic has preserved some interesting documentation concerning the purchase of the most significant painting from his stay there, for the art collections of Prague Castle. This is the artist’s last ever representative large-format canvas, as his life was soon cut short by his untimely death; indeed, the story of this acquisition is linked to that. The painting could not be loaned to the aforementioned exhibition and is now presented separately, as a kind of appendix.
