Cheb-born sculptor Adolf Mayerl (1884-1954) belonged to the generation of German-speaking artists from Bohemia whose promising career was interrupted by the First World War. In the altered cultural and political conditions, and given the difficult economic situation following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he, like many others, had to build his livelihood from scratch. The 1920s brought him commissions in the form of monuments to war victims, among which Mayerl’s works stood out for their artistry and quality of design, as well as the high level of craftsmanship. In Cheb, the social mood in the German areas of Bohemia is also reflected in the Fountain with the Bagpiper and in the Fountain of the Guilds, which were built according to Mayerl’s designs in 1923 and 1926, respectively. New possibilities arose through collaborations with leading Czech-German architects, thanks to which Mayerl created sculptural decorations for a number of representative buildings in Prague, Cheb, and Františkovy Lázně. Although Mayerl’s works still shape the public spaces in these cities today, his name was lost to obscurity after the Second World War. In 2021, Dr Ulrike Zischka from Munich, a native of Františkovy Lázně whose family had a personal friendship with the sculptor, donated a plaster model of a bagpiper for the fountain in Cheb’s Březinova Street. This is now being presented in the exhibition format of a single work called “Opus Magnum” on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the artist’s death.
