GAVU – Great Gallery
30. 6.–18. 9. 2022
Curated by Karel Srp
The monograph exhibition of Jitka Svobodová (*1941), the first woman professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where she headed the studio of drawing between 1990 and 2013, covers the last decade of her artistic activity. It presents a selection of her large-dimensional pastel drawings and objects. The artist has been primarily a draughtswoman since 1974. She is interested in things from her immediate surroundings, which inspire her to develop their many hidden aspects; they have become a contemplative challenge to her to contemplate the meaning and process of representation and the relation between dematerialization and brightening. Tables, chairs, curtains, and tablecloths, as well as trees and clouds, acquire their autonomy and transform into singular and exceptional phenomena, lingering on the edge of being and non-being. The ordinary everyday becomes an extraordinary holiday. The Arbor vitae publishing house cooperated with GAVU Cheb to accompany the exhibition with the artist’s first monograph, richly illustrated and summarizing her oeuvre from the mid-1960s to 2021.
