Jan Urant (*1984) moves between British Wiltshire and Prague. Having graduated from the Chelsea College of Arts, he professes the Anglo-Saxon school characteristic of an original approach to color. He is fascinated by the possibilities of painting as a classical medium, endeavoring to stretch its boundaries via multiple experiments. He likes testing diverse techniques, such as scraping and wiping off layers and undercoats and analyzing binders, luminescent paints, and dry pigments. His works often contain symbolic elements fused with tonal combinations to enhance the message. He quite naturally oscillates between figurative and abstract modes of expression. However, he stylizes the featured elements, such as figures and landscapes, in a shortcut that allows him to play out the relationships between colors, lines, and surfaces. Jan Urant is a remarkable phenomenon in Czech art, if only because he, as a pure colorist, represents a unique position in contemporary painting. On the other hand, this approach underlies his distinctive expression, which has earned him success in recent years, even on the highly competitive contemporary British scene.
