Heike Gallmeier (*1972) lives in Berlin, where she served as a visiting professor at the Universität der Künste between 2018 and 2020. However, she grew up in Hohenberg an der Eger, a town about 10 kilometers away from Cheb, in a house near River Oder, which forms the state border here. After 1989, she began to explore the territory on the other side. Her experiences from that time have been reflected in her paintings and photographs, but the border has remained her significant subject to this day – and it is this line of her work that she now presents in Cheb. The second crucial aspect of the Cheb exhibition is that it is held near Hohenberg. Therefore, Heike decided to link her early works with her current projects. Heike Gallmeier’s art has developed from a traditionally conceived image into a rather complex form. Her central manifestation has become a spatial installation into which she integrates objects, photography, and painting. In 2020, she came up with a project which extends the installations by an additional dimension: she had a large van modified, set up a living area in the front of the cargo area, and adapted the rear part of the van as an exhibition space. The largest project she has prepared for it so far was Outlines (2020–21): for several months, she has traveled practically the whole of Germany along the roads of the neighboring countries, but as close to the border as possible. During her stops, she intensively photographed, using the pictures, found objects and paintings to produce installations related to the place where she had just stopped.
