Against the backdrop of the contemporary context associated with the phenomenon of smoking, this exhibition presents a diverse selection of cigarette packaging from the 1940s to the 1980s. The sharp rise in the popularity of smoking in the 1950s and 60s, which for the ruling class was evidence of the ever-increasing standard of living, was replaced by a gradual decline associated with the recognition of its serious health consequences. This trend has continued to the present day, with increasing pressure from the medical community and society as a whole forcing manufacturers to look for alternatives. The aim of the exhibition is, of course, not to popularise smoking; on the contrary, it aims to recall a time, hardly believable today, when smoking was an integral part of daily life and those who were bothered by it had to adapt. Naturally there’s also a certain nostalgia associated with smoking, which is probably felt more by smokers of that time when looking at the cigarette packets. Presented in addition to the development of packaging design for the well-known brands (Partyzánka, Lipa, Sparta, Start, Petra, etc.) is that of the lesser-known brands that didn’t catch-on in the market, as well as the phenomenon of the occasional special-editions created for expos, fairs, sporting events (!), political anniversaries, and Communist Party congresses. Their greatest boom came in the 1970s and 80s, when selected enterprises, companies, hotels, and cooperatives had their own promotional or representative cigarettes produced. The refills were either cigarettes by existing brands or slightly modified recipes specifically prepared for the given production.
