Curatedy by Jan Mergl

Pressed glass (or pattern glass) represents one of the most significant chapters in the history of Czechoslovak and later Czech modern art of glassmaking. The idea of reviving its production, previously limited by the wartime period, surfaced as early as the 1950s and pressed glass soon became a phenomenon whose importance persists until today. Over time, there emerged a whole pleiad of outstanding glass designers involved in it. In the first wave, it was František Zemek, František Pečený, Václav Hanuš, and Miloš Filip, followed by Rudolf Jurnikl, František Vízner, Vladislav Urban, Adolf Matura, Miloš Filip, or Jiří Zejmon. The exhibition aims to present various approaches to designing and producing pressed glass via a rich selection of shapes and types of vases, bowls, and tableware sets. An array of examples of company documentation, production catalogs, and promotion materials accompany the works on display.
